Medical researchers say Australians are not being told about valuable public health information because governments are suppressing their work. Australian academics say their work is being blocked on what they call a system-wide basis to stop the publication of unfavourable results or because the work is controversial and could embarrass a minister.

Two Academics at the University of Western Australia have published a paper in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health on the censorship of academic research.They surveyed medical health researchers and found one third had witnessed a Federal, State or Territory Government suppressing academic papers.

Chief executive of the Public Health Association and the former population health researcher Michael Moore said he experienced the sort of government censorship that is denying Australians potentially valuable public health information."I was also employed by the Federal Government in a particular piece of research on gambling and that piece of research has never seen the light of day," he said.

"It didn't eventuate. The public service probably felt they owned it and didn't need to put it out into the public arena." Mr Moore said any censorship is extraordinarily frustrating and undemocratic.

"When we're talking about public health information, then it's really hard to imagine what the cases may be where the research has been done and governments seem to find a reason to contain that information to sanitise it, or suppress it completely," he said."What we really want is the healthiest possible society and a healthy society is one where information is open and apparent and people can look at it and make their own decisions."-End Quote

The pharmaceutical cartels are a dominant corporate industry which remains unregulated and has the financial resources to monopolize certain areas.

There is a vast list of alternative medicines that have never made it successfully into public hands.

The history of these cases show that this is due to corporate suppression, however, to a tiny extent this is also due to the dogma associated with the mainstream curricular.
